Board of Health

The mission of the Carlstadt Board of Health is to promote good health and prevent disease, improve access to health services, assess changing community needs for health services, and provide health services with efficiency to improve the health of all Carlstadt residents. The health services provided are available to residents in Carlstadt and reflect state-mandated standards of performance. The staff ensures the compliance and enforcement of the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection laws and New Jersey State regulations. The Board is responsible for the development of long-term goals and annual objectives for enhancing the quality of life for Carlstadt residents.
The Board of Health members monitors the activities of the Health Official, Sanitary Inspector and the Public Health Nurse from Holy Name Hospital.
The Sanitarian inspects all businesses that handle food, inspects vending machines and investigates any health related complaints. The Public Health Nurse administers the Health Consultation Program on the third Wednesday of the month at the Carlstadt Civic Center on Fourth Street from 12pm to 1:30P.M. She also assists with the flu clinics for seniors, first responders and the chronically ill.
The Registrar of Vital Statistics issues marriage licenses, burial permits, and birth, death and marriage transcripts. The Carlstadt Board of Health is under contract with Bergen County Animal Control Services. All dogs and cats are required to be licensed when they reach the age of six months and licenses must be renewed by January 31st of each year.
Safe Disposal of Expired Or Unused Prescription Medications
Residents may drop-off expired or unused medications in a receptacle inside the lobby of the Carlstadt Police Department 24 hours a day.
Safe Syringe/Sharps Disposal Program
This program is offered through Englewood Hospital and Medical Center at 201-894-3189 and through Holy Name Environmental Services at 201-833-3176.
Board Members
The Board of Health consists of seven members and is staffed with a sanitarian inspector. It contracts with Mid Bergen Regional and Hackensack Awareness Regional Program for health education and health officer services.
The members serve four-year terms. Their principal obligation is the protection of the public health of the Borough. The board is an autonomous committee and is empowered by the State statutes to enact, entirely independent of the Mayor and Council, codes regulating all matters of public health.

Board of Health Meetings
